Lunar Occultation of the Seven Sisters
![]() This was one difficult photo to try to capture. Clouds continually passed in front of the Moon. I couldn't see the Sisters at all. What exposure did I need to get both the Moon and the main stars of the Plaeides? Using a Canon 400D with Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro telephoto zoom lens (fl=300mm) I eventually took one at 1/20th sec @ ISO800 and f/5.6 and it seems to have got the balance just right. Moon is slightly over-exposed but the stars Atlas (immed. below Moon), Alcyone, Merope, Maia, Electra,Taygeta, Celaeno, and Sterope are all there. But where is Pleione? She is, in fact, hiding behind Luna's skirts - just grazing the edge at this latitude but you can't see it with all the bright moonlight. 07 January 2009 1845h
