Jupiter & Moons: 19 March 2004
| This was constructed by
combining two CCD images taken through a 114mm reflector.
The first image was set up so that the the moons would be visible, which grossly over-exposed Jupiter itself. The "bloom" from the planet hid the moon Callisto which was very close to the planet at the time (23:00h UT). The second CCD image was set up to optimise Jupiter itself. The separate video images were stacked and refined using Registax v.2.2.0.0. The two resultant images were then combined using Paint Shop Pro 8. The moons visible in the image below are (from top left to bottom right) Ganymede, Io, and Europa. The stripes caused by the weather systems on Jupiter are evident and the "squashed" elliptical planet shape caused by the rapid velocity of the planet's rotation is clearly shown. |
